7 Summer Tips for Dogs
Summer is here, and with it comes rising temperatures that not only affect us humans but our beloved pups as well. Here are 7 summer tips to make sure your dogs stay cool and comfortable during the hot summer months.
Hydration, Hydration, HYDRATION!!: Just like us humans, dogs run the risk of dehydration during hotter months. Make sure your dog has access to fresh and clean drinking water. Dogs can dehydrate rapidly, so you may find yourself refilling their water bowl more often than usual. Dog Mom Tip: Create a feeding enrichment by adding water to their licky mats or add water to their normal feeding routine.
Hot Pavement = Burnt Paws: While we like to bake in the summer heat...it's not the same for our dogs' paws. Pavements can heat up quite dramatically during the day, causing discomfort or even burns for our pups. Dog Mom Tip: Check the pavement with the back of your hand (it is more sensitive than your palm). If you are able to keep the back of your hand on the pavement comfortably for more than 5 seconds, it's good for a walk - otherwise, it's probably too hot for your dog. Early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are generally cooler.
Summer Trims: Depending on the type and breed of your dog, summer may require a little more grooming. While some dogs may benefit from a light trim, do avoid shaving them completely. Their coat helps maintain their body temperature and protects them from sunburns.
Creative Cooling Methods: Give your dog a chilled retreat with cooling mats, vests, or Nermington's bandanas during hot summer days. Dog Mom Tip: Whip up a little dog-friendly "popsicle" from pet-friendly ingredients for an enjoyable cooling treat. Add in some hydrating pet-friendly fruits to give them an extra boost of hydration.
Beat The Heat - Stay Indoors: Physical activity is vital for a dog's health, but it's best to avoid outdoor exercise during hot days. Instead, play with your dog indoors where it can stay cool and comfortable. Dog Mom Tip: Get creative with playtime: hide treats around the house for them to find, invest in food enrichment toys, and bonus mom points for creating an indoor ball pit.
Car Safety is Important!: Leaving a dog inside a parked car during summer can have dire consequences. Even with windows slightly open, the inside temperature can skyrocket quickly, putting your dog at risk of heatstroke. When in doubt, leave the pup at home, with a friend, or take them to a day of fun at your local doggy daycare while you run errands.
Stay Alert for Signs of Heat Stroke: Recognizing the symptoms of heat stroke could save your dog’s life. Look out for signs such as heavy panting, dry or bright red gums, thick drool, vomiting, diarrhea, or instability in their gait. Dog Mom Tip: Make sure you have a 24-hour vet office at your fingertips just in case of emergencies.
Keeping these tips in mind will help ensure your dog stays safe, cool, and happy during the summer months. Enjoy the season, and make sure your pups enjoy it too!
